Bibliography Generator

Add multiple sources (websites, books, or academic articles) and generate a complete reference list, alphabetized by author, in APA, MLA, or Chicago style. All formatting happens in your browser, without sending your data to any server.

How it works

  1. Choose the citation style: APA (7th edition), MLA (9th edition), or Chicago (author-date).
  2. Fill in the first source's details: type, author, year, title, and the fields specific to that type.
  3. Click 'Add another source' to include more references in the list.
  4. The bibliography is generated automatically, sorted alphabetically by each source's first author's surname.
  5. Copy the full list with one click.

Use cases

  • Put together the full reference list for an academic paper with several sources.
  • Generate a bibliography in a style other than APA, like MLA or Chicago, as required by your institution.
  • Alphabetically sort references you already had scattered in different formats.
  • Verify that an existing bibliography has the correct order and formatting for the required style.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the citation style after filling in several sources and expecting to have to rewrite them.
The style is applied automatically to all sources already entered; there's no need to re-type the data — just change the style selector and the whole list reformats.
  • Leaving the author field empty on a source and not understanding why it doesn't appear in the list.
A source is only included in the generated bibliography if it has at least the author and title filled in; check that both fields are complete for each source.
  • Expecting the alphabetical order to consider the first name instead of the surname.
The bibliography is sorted by each source's first author's surname (the first word before the comma in the author field), as required by the format of all three styles.

Alternatives

Reference managers like Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote generate full bibliographies from imported metadata and integrate with word processors. This tool is convenient for putting together a quick bibliography with a handful of sources without installing a full manager.
