Spell Checker

Checks a text's spelling in Spanish or English by comparing each word against a Hunspell dictionary (the same format used by LibreOffice and Firefox), and suggests up to 5 corrections for each word it doesn't recognize. All analysis happens in your browser, without sending your text to any server.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your text into the input panel.
  2. Choose the text's language: Spanish or English.
  3. Click 'Check spelling'; the first time in each language, your browser downloads the corresponding dictionary.
  4. Every unique word in the text is compared against the dictionary, and the ones not recognized are listed with how many times they appear and up to 5 correction suggestions.

Use cases

  • Check the spelling of an email, post, or document before sending or publishing it.
  • Catch typos in a long text pasted from another source.
  • Verify proper nouns or technical terms you might not immediately recognize as misspelled.
  • Check a text in English if it's not your native language, before sharing it.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong language for the text you're checking.
The dictionary is language-specific; checking a Spanish text with the English dictionary (or vice versa) flags nearly every word as an error. Verify the selected language before checking.
  • Expecting the tool to catch grammar or agreement errors, not just spelling.
This tool only checks whether each word exists in the dictionary, not whether the sentence makes grammatical sense. A correctly spelled but misused word isn't caught here; use the Basic Grammar Checker for that kind of issue.
  • Being surprised that proper nouns, brand names, or technical jargon show up flagged as errors.
The dictionary contains general-use words for the language; proper nouns, brand names, very specific technical terms, or words from another language aren't included and will be marked as unknown even if they're spelled correctly.

Alternatives

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and most browsers include a built-in spell checker that reviews as you type. This tool is useful for checking a text already written elsewhere all at once, without needing to paste it into a new document.
