Green Screen Remover (Green Chroma Key)

Upload a photo taken in front of a green screen and remove the background automatically by hue, without having to click to pick the exact shade of green. Includes reduction of the green spill that often lingers on hair and the edges of the subject. All processing happens in your browser.

How it works

  1. Select an image taken in front of a green screen using the file picker.
  2. The tool converts every pixel to hue, saturation, and value (HSV) and automatically detects the ones that fall within the green-screen hue range, with no need to manually pick a color.
  3. Adjust the sensitivity to widen or narrow the range of greens detected, depending on your photo's lighting.
  4. Enable green-spill reduction to tone down the greenish tint left on hair or clothing edges near the background.
  5. Download the result as a PNG, the only format that preserves transparency.

Use cases

  • Remove the background from a streaming or video-call photo taken in front of a green cloth or panel.
  • Prepare a product photo or portrait shot on a green screen to place it over a different background.
  • Clean up stills from a homemade green-screen recording before using them in a thumbnail or design.
  • Quickly test whether your green screen's lighting and color are uniform enough before a longer shoot.

Common mistakes

  • Using this tool on a background of a color other than green, expecting it to be detected too.
This tool specifically targets green hues (unlike the Background Remover, which accepts any color). If your background is blue, white, or another color, use that tool instead.
  • Uploading a photo with very uneven lighting on the green screen and expecting a clean cutout.
Shadows darken the green and can fall outside the detected range. Raise the sensitivity to cover those darker shades, or improve the green screen's lighting before shooting.
  • Wearing green clothing or accessories and being surprised they turn transparent too.
This is a classic chroma-key limitation, not a bug in the tool: any green object in frame is treated as part of the background. Avoid green clothing or props when shooting in front of a green screen.

Alternatives

Streaming and video-editing software (OBS Studio, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve) includes real-time chroma key for video, with finer control. This tool is a quick, free alternative for still photos, with nothing to install and no image uploaded to any server.
