Number PDF Pages
Upload a PDF, choose the position and starting number, and add automatic page numbering in one click. Everything is processed in your browser with pdf-lib, without uploading the file to any server.
How it works
- Select a PDF file from your device.
- Choose the number's position: bottom center, bottom right, or top right.
- Set which number to start counting from (defaults to 1).
- Click 'Number pages' so pdf-lib draws, in gray, size-10 Helvetica, the matching number on each page in a consecutive sequence starting from that number.
- Download the result as numbered-document.pdf.
Use cases
- Add numbering to a report or thesis assembled from several documents with no page numbers.
- Number a contract's attachments starting from a number other than 1, to continue the main body's numbering.
- Prepare a booklet or dossier for printing with visible numbering on every sheet.
- Number the pages of a manual or guide before sharing it, so specific pages can be referenced.

Common mistakes
- Expecting the numbering to respect page numbers already present in the document's original design. This tool draws a new number on each page based on its position in the PDF; if the document already had printed numbers as part of its content, both will overlap or sit close together.
- Setting a starting number other than 1 without considering that numbering still runs consecutively page by page. The 'Start numbering from' value only shifts the starting point; from there, every page adds one — you can't skip numbers or restart the count partway through the document.
- Not checking whether the chosen position overlaps existing content near the page edges.Try the three available positions (bottom center, bottom right, top right) and download the result to visually confirm the number doesn't cover text or images from the original document.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, the 'Start numbering from' field sets the first page's number; the rest follow consecutively.
Three options: bottom center, bottom right, or top right.

No. Numbering is drawn with pdf-lib entirely in your browser.
Alternatives
Adobe Acrobat, Word, or Google Docs (when exporting to PDF) can also add page numbering. This tool is convenient when you already have the final PDF and just need to add numbers without regenerating the document from its source.
