Unlock PDF

Upload a password-protected PDF, type the password you already know, and download an unprotected copy. This is a known-password removal tool, not a decryption tool: pdf.js opens the document with the password you enter and each page is redrawn as an image inside a new PDF, so the result's text is no longer selectable or searchable. Everything happens in your browser, without uploading the file to any server.

How it works

  1. Select the protected PDF file from your device.
  2. Type the document's current password in the corresponding field.
  3. Click 'Remove password'; pdf.js opens the PDF using that password and renders each page to a high-resolution image (2x scale).
  4. Those images are inserted, one per page, into a new PDF document with no protection at all.
  5. Download the result as unlocked-document.pdf.

Use cases

  • Remove the password from your own PDF so you can merge or edit it with other tools that don't accept encrypted files.
  • Generate an unprotected copy of a document whose password you already know, to share it more easily with your team.
  • Archive without a password a PDF that's already served its purpose of being temporarily protected.
  • Prepare a protected PDF to run it through other tools on this site (split, merge, watermark) that require open files.

Common mistakes

  • Using this tool expecting it to discover or 'crack' an unknown password.
It's not a decryption tool; you need to know the PDF's current password. If the password is wrong, the error 'The password is incorrect' is shown and no file is generated.
  • Expecting the resulting PDF's text to stay selectable or searchable.
The result is generated by rendering each page as an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable in the unlocked PDF; if you need selectable text, you'll have to rebuild it with another tool.
  • Clicking 'Remove password' with the password field empty.
The button stays disabled until you type something in the password field.

Frequently asked questions

No. You need to type the PDF's current, correct password; the tool doesn't decrypt or guess it.

No. Each page is converted to an image before being inserted into the new document, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.

The tool shows the error 'The password is incorrect' and doesn't generate any output file.

No. The entire process, including using the password, happens completely in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib.

Alternatives

Adobe Acrobat can remove a PDF's password while keeping the text selectable if you know the permissions password. This tool is convenient for a quick, free case with no installation, though with the limitation that the result is image-based.
