Enter the clock-in and clock-out time for one or more shifts, subtract break time, and instantly get the total hours worked, both as hours-and-minutes and as a decimal. Overnight shifts that cross midnight are detected automatically, and if you add an hourly rate, it also calculates an estimated payout.
How it works
- Enter the clock-in and clock-out time for the shift; if you worked several days or shifts, add one for each with the 'Add shift' button.
- Enter each shift's break minutes (lunch, pauses), which are subtracted from the gross time worked.
- If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the tool assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours automatically (for example, 22:00 to 06:00 works out to 8 hours).
- The total hours worked recalculates instantly across all shifts, shown both as 'Xh Ym' and as a decimal number (for example, 8h 30m and 8.50 h).
- If you add an hourly rate, an estimated payout is calculated automatically from the net hours worked.

Common mistakes
- Entering the same clock-in and clock-out time expecting it to count as a full day.A shift with identical clock-in and clock-out times is calculated as 0 minutes, not 24 hours. If the shift genuinely crosses midnight, the clock-out time needs to be different from the clock-in time (e.g. 22:00 to 06:00, not 22:00 to 22:00).
- Forgetting that break minutes are subtracted from the gross total, not added separately.The break field reduces that shift's net hours; if the shift had no breaks, leave it at 0 instead of an arbitrary value.
- Expecting the hourly rate to apply per individual shift instead of to the total.The hourly rate you enter applies to the sum of net hours across all shifts, not separately to each one.
